Twitter Enforces 1000 Following Limits

A recent update on the status of Twitter enforcing the number of accounts a single person can follow in a day has been released. Full excerpt below:

A note about per day following limits 13 hours ago

Do Not CrossFor some time, we’ve limited the number of accounts that a single person can follow in a day to 1000. A few days ago, we found that this limit was not being consistently applied and we started enforcing it for all users.

While there are technical reasons behind having some limit on following activites, this per-day limit exists to discourage spamminess. Also, it is unlikely that anyone can actually read tweets from thousands of accounts which makes the mass following activity disingenuous.

We understand that there may be exceptions where mass following is needed in excess of the daily limit: for example, some API applications or for the ability to exchange direct messages. There are also some who think it’s simply polite to follow back other accounts.

We’d like to find ways to directly support the other goals folks are trying to achieve. If you have feedback, please send a reply to @twitter and let us know. We’re listening and will be looking to do more to address the underlying needs.

There you go. If you are just starting, first understand how the 2000 limit works and then make sure you don’t follow more than 1000 people every day, although I think that it is a lot.

Well said Holly. Unless you group your followers, it is impossible to read all their Tweets. With the recent addition of Twitter list, it now makes it easier to select a group and follow those precious and not disingenuous activities, lol.

LOL - indeed. I love them for using the word "disingenuous."

@Jan - Thanks for visiting. I agree with you that "growing" your followers base organically is much better. My trick, on this particular situation is what I have told you before. Adding to that, I look at random tweets and answer to some questions. That alone will give you more followers. Also, it is good to use Twellow.com to find people within topics of your interest.

Well, at 1K per day I'd be able to catch up with you, buddy. Say in a week's time? No, too much hassle. Although I'd like to know your tricks, I'm more inclined to grow it organically. ",)
